If you’re looking to restore your smile using porcelain veneers, you know the results can look great. You also know that they can last a long time. You probably also know that they can be expensive, but you might think you can get around this by getting your porcelain veneers one at a time to spread out the cost.
But this isn’t advisable, for a number of reasons.
Color Match
Color matching with veneers is a great art, and we’re quite good at it. We can match your veneers to the color of your natural teeth and ensure that they won’t stand out, if you don’t want them to.
But the problem is that porcelain veneers are stain resistant. How is this a problem? Well, your teeth aren’t. So if we match your veneer to your teeth, then over time your teeth will become more discolored and the veneer won’t match them. When it comes time to put in a second veneer, then, what do we match: the teeth or the first veneer? It’s best to get a full set of veneers so they can match one another and provide an attractive, natural appearance.
Best for the Bite
If you’re placing porcelain veneers to build up small teeth or worn teeth, we can’t just build up one at a time. If we try, then you’ll have a veneered tooth that is taller than all your natural teeth. This will make the veneer vulnerable to cracking and can increase wear on the opposite teeth as well, especially if you have TMJ or other bite problems.
It can even cause some of the teeth, which aren’t meeting their opposition any more, to emerge further from the jaw, called super eruption, which has to be treated with orthodontics.
Good Veneers Make Good Neighbors
Like your natural teeth, porcelain veneers should fit together and support one another. This not only helps reduce breakage, it makes for an attractive appearance. To ensure that all your veneers work properly together, we need to design them that way, and that means designing and placing them all at once.
Think of it this way: when you replace your car tires, you typically replace all four, because they need to work together to give optimal performance. Replacing just one or two can reduce your stability on the road.
Time Is Money
And, of course, there’s this question: how much are you really saving if you have to make multiple visits to our office for the placement of each separate veneer. Of course, there’s the charge for each visit, which adds up, but you also have to figure that your time is valuable. Do you really want to sign up for that many more dental visits?
