At Firouzian Dentistry, the comfort of our patients is one of our primary concerns. We are always looking for ways to make people more comfortable before, during, and after their dental visit, including sedation dentistry.
That’s why we’re very happy to announce a new approach to local anesthetic injections that will make you more comfortable and lead to faster, more complete numbing.
The Problem with Local Anesthetic Injections
Local anesthetic injections will get you numb, but first, they can cause significant discomfort. The needle itself causes a small amount of discomfort, but it passes quickly. The more significant stinging associated with anesthetic injections is due to the anesthesia itself.
Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that is used in most medical procedures, but it has one undesirable characteristic: it’s highly acidic. How acidic? Acidic enough that if it were spilled on your teeth, it would erode them. It’s comparable to citrus juice, like lime or lemon. Put in this perspective, no wonder the anesthetic stings first before it begins to numb.
What’s worse is that, although this acidic form is what’s necessary to bind to the nerves, it can’t actually enter the nerves this way. Your body has to transform the acidic form to a neutral form so it can enter the nerve, then it has to be changed back to become effective. That;s why it takes so long to get numb.
A Better Approach to Anesthesia Injections
That’s why we were so excited to hear about Anutra anesthesia buffering. This form of lidocaine is designed so that it matches the pH of our body, which reduces the amount of stinging at the injection site. It also allows the anesthesia to immediately enter your nerves, so you get numb faster. For many patients, we won’t even leave the room to wait while you get numb, it’s that fast.
If you are interested in anesthesia injections that cause little or no stinging, and faster numbing, please call (614) 848-5001 for an appointment with a Columbus, OH cosmetic dentist at Firouzian Dentistry.
